NFL to Farmers
When a well paid NFL football lineman quits the game to raise food for the needy, that's an unusually interesting story. After St. Louis Rams center Jason Brown decided to leave the game for good, his agent told him that he was making the biggest mistake of his life. Jason adamantly replied, "No I'm not. No I'm not.

Jason Brown had decided that he wanted to do something more worthwhile and worthy of the covenant that he and his wife, both devout Christians involved with the Wisdom for Life Ministry, had made with God.

Jason says the message he had received to walk away from the NFL included moving back to his home state of North Carolina and starting a farm, even though he knew nothing about farming. And his "covenant with God" was to use the farm for raising food for the needy.

you can see Jason Brown’s home page. I like it.

Eating fish twice a week 'protects women's hearing'
A new study has forged a connection between eating two or more portions of fish a week and a decreased risk of hearing loss.

Scientists analysed the diets of more than 65,000 women from 1991 to 2009 before reaching their startling conclusion.

"Consumption of any type of fish tended to be associated with lower risk," said lead author Dr Sharon G. Curhan, of the Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School.

"These findings suggest that diet may be important in the prevention of acquired hearing loss."

Study participants self-reported 11,606 cases of hearing loss, with data revealing those who ate fish at least twice a week had a 20% less chance of hearing loss than those who did not.

Dr Curhan said the research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that higher fish consumption and intake of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids helped improve cochlear blood flow.

"Blood flow to the inner ear needs to be very well regulated to meet its high energy demands," she added.

"Acquired hearing loss is a highly prevalent and often disabling chronic health condition.

"Although a decline in hearing is often considered an inevitable aspect of ageing, the identification of several potentially modifiable risk factors has provided new insight into possibilities for prevention or delay of acquired hearing loss."

The study team do not yet know whether eating fish has the same benefits for men.

10 Smoothies for Clearer Skin
Combine foods that are good for skin health in the blender and drink your way to better skin with these healthy smoothie recipes.
I just got banana, blueberry and red grape smoothie. It was really good.

Boost your brain power with these 3 superfoods
One of the first things people notice when feeling tired or sleep deprived is a lack of mental clarity. Focus becomes hampered, brain fog sets in, and it's a fight to get anything done that requires any cognitive capacity.

Although this is likely a result of many different factors, there are some foods you can consider to get you through the short term that may help boost your brainpower, without sacrificing your energy long term (like coffee). Combining these 3 superfoods together could do just that.
Maca
Maca has been cultivated and grown high in the Andes for thousands of years. This hard crop grows where no other cultivated crop can survive, flourishing at altitudes of 9,000 to 14,000 feet in extreme climate of cold winds and strong sunlight.

Maca's ability to increase one's mental capacity is due to the fact that it works directly on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It also has the healing power to rejuvenate the adrenal glands, which helps us cope with stressful situations.
Cacao
Cacao is considered a highly beneficial medicine containing over 300 beneficial chemical compounds. Unfortunately, many of the products produced from raw cacao are destroyed through processing, cooking, refining, and otherwise denaturing the original source. A good example of this is the common chocolate bars that have very low levels of cacao compared to other ingredients such as sugars, dairy, hydrogenated oils, soy, and artificial flavorings.
Cacao has been shown to increase levels of specific neurotransmitters in our brains that help promote a positive outlook, facilitates rejuvenation, and lifts our spirits. Some of the beneficial chemicals in cacao that help with this include:
Endorphins: Cacao stimulates the secretion of endorphins to produce a pleasurable feeling.
Serotonin: Cacao raises the levels of serotonin and acts as an anti-depressant, which helps promote a sense of well being.
Anandamide: Also known as the 'bliss chemical' as the brain releases ananamide when we feel happy. Cacao contains N-acylethanolamines that increase levels of anandamide in the brain and enzyme inhibitors that slow its breakdown. This helps promote longer periods of relaxation.
Phenylethylamine (PEA): A natural chemical compound created and released by the brain when we are in love. PEA acts as a mood elevator and anti-depressant, and helps increase focus and alertness. The benefits of cacao are most potent in its raw form. Typical chocolate bars should not be considered therapeutic. Look for high levels of cacao and minimal processing and avoid ingredients such as sugar, dairy, and soy to reep the mind enhancing benefits.
Reishi
Known in Eastern medicine as the "mushroom of immortality" and "King of Herbs", Reishi is a medicinal mushroom that grows in various regions of the world where damp and temperate conditions exist.
Reishi's ability to positively affect the mind comes from its ability to maintain equilibrium and help the body maintain balance. A balanced body is a sign of a healthy and properly functioning immune system, which will result in a healthy and positive outlook. Not only that, this healing herb's adaptogenic qualities provide us with an incredible ability to handle stressful situations which eases our anxiety and increases mental clarity.
Reishi is also very antibacterial and antifungal, which helps clean up the digestive system and strengthens the vagus nerve connection from the gut to the brain, to increase mental clarity and capacity.
I take Reishi tablet daily. It is from Japan.

Avocados can help fight disease and balance hormones
Many nutritionists consider the avocado, which is native to the region stretching from the central highlands of Mexico to the Pacific Coast of Central America, to be one of the healthiest fruits in the world. This is because, unlike most other fruits, these green-skinned, single-seeded berries are rich in beneficial fats that are proven to boost our health in countless ways.

However, avocados are also bursting with many other nutrients lacking in the Western diet, making them an excellent "all-round" food for correcting deficiencies and tackling diseases. This article takes a closer look at the health benefits of this often misunderstood fruit, which deserves far more attention in the Western world than it currently receives.
Rich in disease-fighting fats
We can expect to receive an impressive 29 grams of total fat from the average avocado grown in Florida and California. Around 67 percent of this fat is monounsaturated, 16 percent is polyunsaturated and 15 percent is saturated.

The primary monounsaturated fatty acid in avocado is oleic acid, which can prevent the onset of several serious diseases. For example, a study published in Nutrition in 2004 found that oleic acid (along with certain polyunsaturated acids) could be "useful for decreasing risk factors for cardiovascular disease."  A study published in Lipids in Health and Disease in 2009 also discovered that oleic acid could reverse the negative effects of inflammatory proteins in obese and diabetic patients, suggesting that it can help prevent and possibly even treat type 2 diabetes.
Hormone-balancing properties
Avocados contain certain plant sterols, such as beta-sitosterol, that possess antiestrogenic properties, meaning they can block the estrogen receptors in our cells and reduce estrogen absorption rates. Consequently, progesterone levels in women and testosterone levels in men are increased. (4) This makes avocados an especially valuable food in today's world of widespread pollution and gender-bending chemicals, which can greatly compromise endocrine function.
Packed with carotenoids
Avocados are rich in a beneficial group of phytochemicals called carotenoids, which are plant-based precursors to the powerful antioxidant vitamin A. One of the carotenoids found in avocados, beta-carotene, is especially well-known for its cancer-fighting benefits. A study published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications in August 2013, for instance, found that beta-carotene could inhibit the growth of tumors associated with neuroblastoma, an aggressive cancer that affects young children.

Two other carotenoids found in avocados, lutein and zeaxanthin, are found in high concentrations in the macula of the human eye and are renowned for their vision-boosting properties. According to a report published by the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, lutein and zeaxanthin supplements can even prevent age-related macular generation, the most common cause of vision loss in Westerners aged 50 or older.
High in nutrients
One American avocado supplies our bodies with approximately 33 percent of our recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C, 53 percent of our RDA of vitamin K, 28 percent of our RDA of potassium and similarly high amounts of other beneficial nutrients such as vitamin E, manganese, magnesium and most B vitamins. Additionally, one avocado contains a whopping 13 grams of dietary fiber, which is over 50 percent of our RDA.  This is far more fiber per weight than most other fruits, making avocados one of the best foods for treating constipation.

Best foods to detoxify the body
The benefits of detoxifying the body go well beyond merely striving to help it bounce back after a weekend of unhealthy eating or drinking. In fact, the flushing out of toxins on a regular basis helps eliminate harmful substances that gradually accumulate in the blood and, in turn, wreak havoc on the body.
An overload of toxins can jeopardize health from slight issues to life-threatening conditions ranging from bad breath and acne to depression and cancer. While many people choose to eat healthy, organic, whole foods, there still exist opportunities for harmful chemicals to seep into the body; everything from aluminum-containing deodorants to declining air quality are ways that people are exposed to potentially problematic health conditions.
Even some foods often considered healthy may not necessarily be, as Mike Adams demonstrated during his appearance on The Dr. Oz Show. For example, he noted that some rice protein powders, typically ones that are imported from Asia, contain high levels of lead, cadmium and even tungsten.  Adams expressed that his concern comes from the fact that many people ingest all kinds of toxins day in and day out, and their accumulation over time is what can negatively impact health.
Of findings like lead and tungsten, Dr. Oz says that "metals do lots of things... they're good for us, but they're not supposed to be in our foods."
Best foods to help detoxify the body
To help the body purge such harmful substances, regular detoxification is beneficial. Here's a closer look at the foods that can best detoxify our system so it functions at optimal levels and stays as healthy as possible.

Turmeric    One of the main ingredients in this popular spice is a phytochemical called curcumin, which has been found to help the liver detox and also decrease inflammation throughout the body.

Garlic    Since ancient times, garlic has been used as a way to detox the body, removing toxins from the liver and kidneys. Garlic's natural substance alliin is broken down into allicin, which has healing properties that fight free radicals.

Dandelion    Typically something that people frown upon when seeing it all over their lawns, dandelion leaves are actually safe for consumption and a good source of potassium and iron. Whether eaten in a salad or taken as an extract, it's known to help stimulate bile production and improve liver and overall health.

Greens    Chlorophyll, which is what gives vegetation its green color, may have the ability to prevent cancer-causing chemicals from being absorbed in the body. Look for parsley, arugula, green beans and spinach, which are very good chlorophyll sources.

World's almond supply approaching collapse due to California drought
Almond farmers in California's Central Valley, where about 80 percent of the world's supply of almonds is grown, are desperate for water. As most of the state hobbles through one of its worst droughts in history, growers are reportedly siphoning off water wherever they can get it, robbing taxpayers and the general public of a shared and increasingly scarce resource that could take many years to replenish.
Though they are fairly drought-resistant, almonds are growing in popularity all over the world. They have exceeded peanuts here in the States as the consumer nut of choice, and developing nations like China are demanding them like never before. This has resulted in the conversion of more than one million acres of the Central Valley into almond orchards, more than twice the amount compared to 1996.

5 Healthy food pairings that Supercharge health and diet
What if eating the right combinations of foods had the ability to impact the body for the good? Some things just go together well, but inside the body they can pack a powerful punch when paired with the right component. So many people want to go on restrictive diets that are actually not healthy. Having a varied diet that incorporates a wide variety of nutrients is not only healthy but can help lose weight faster. To super boost a healthy eating lifestyle, try pairing some of the following blends.

1. Tomatoes and avocado
This dynamic duo is known to reduce inflammation. Tomatoes are commonly used in Mexican foods, and adding a little avocado may take it to a whole new level. Avocado has a healthy fat and it can absorb lycopene in the body. A study from the Ohio State University showed that people who added avocado to their salsa mix were absorbing more than 4x more lycopene. Eating foods rich in lycopene plays a role in cancer prevention. It can also help with inflammatory disease and can prevent cataracts.
2. Green tea and lemon juice
This pair allows the body to have greater antioxidant absorption. Any tea with lemon tastes good, but adding lemon juice to a drink has a great deal of health benefits. The citrus juice when added to green tea helps the body to have an increased ability to absorb antioxidants. The more lemon juice the better.
3. Pasta and vinegar
Pasta is great but adding a bit of vinegar to it will help a person feel full longer and fight fat. Many people eat a big plate of pasta but are hungry soon after. Because of its sugar content, pasta causes one's sugar levels to spike. However, the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vinegar can reduce these glucose spikes. Cold pasta salads with vinegar dressing work well.
4. Skim milk and banana
Want stronger bones, have some skimmed milk and bananas. Dairy products are full of calcium. Bananas help with calcium absorption and can create strong and healthy bones. Try a smoothie with bananas and milk and add some oatmeal for bulk. Bones become brittle as person begins to age, but the potassium and calcium in this mixture is great for bone health.
5. Fish and red wine
Fish and red wine are both known to enhance heart health, but putting them together is an ultra-mix for the body. A nice piece of salmon with a glass of red wine may be heart healthy and provide great antioxidants for the whole body. An omega-3-rich fatty fish, like salmon and trout, just increases these body benefits further. But bear in mind they are not calorie free. Try to stick to a glass of wine that is about 4 ounces coupled with 4 ounces of fish, and add garlic to the mix for an extra immune system boost. Talk about a delicious treat that is also healthy, fish with garlic and red wine is a truly heart healthy dinner.

Babies and toddlers do not eat much food because their tummies are tiny. That is why it is important to feed them foods that are packed with nutrients. Superfoods are natural foods that are high in nutrients and antioxidants packed with health giving properties. They are easily digestible and keep the body and mind healthy and working great. These 10 superfoods are essential for babies' and toddlers' growing bodies:

Avocados are the best first food for your baby. They are a perfect consistency and they contain an abundance of nutrients including high levels of omega-3s. You can simply slice open an avocado and feed it straight into your little one's mouth. If you would like a smoother consistency, add a little breast milk or substitute and mash.

2. Beans
Beans are super nutritious. They are very high in antioxidants containing 10 times the amount of antioxidants as oranges. They are high in fiber, which prevents your baby from becoming constipated. They are high in iron, protein and vitamin B. They should be soaked overnight before preparing to decrease cooking time.

The benefits of dance for senior citizens
The thought of exercise may make some people groan and sigh in anticipation. However, physical activity doesn't have to be grueling or boring. Engaging in dance is wonderful for healthy aging and keeping seniors strong while they have a ball.
A study conducted at St. Louis University used dance therapy intervention to reduce hip or knee pain and improve mobility in residents of a senior living community. Results showed a positive relationship between weekly dance classes and mobility strength. According to the lead author Jean Krampe, Ph.D., seniors have a higher risk for falls when they aren't stable on their feet.
"Doctors and nurses recognize gait speed as the sixth vital sign that can help us predict adverse outcomes for older adults," said Krampe, an assistant professor of nursing at SLU.
Study procedure
This research was published in Geriatric Nursing and involved a 12-week study of retirement community residents, half of which attended dance classes. A customized dance therapy plan, dubbed Healthy-Steps, was created for the investigation. Healthy-Steps was designed for older people with knee or hip pain. It incorporates low-impact dance moves and can be done sitting or standing up.
Most of the participants were women, with an average age of 80. They all had pain or stiffness in their knees or hips, often due to arthritis. The intervention program entailed dancing for 45-minute sessions once or twice a week. Individuals in the group who completed the dance program reported a 39 percent reduction in their need for pain medication while the other half increased pain relief medication consumption by 21 percent.
Why choose dance?
Many health organizations recommend seniors remain physically active to avoid or postpone health issues ranging from cognitive decline to cardiovascular disease. Dancing can be much more enjoyable than other aerobic exercises, but those interested may want to check with their doctor before beginning a new workout routine.
According to Livestrong.com, dance can be used as a method of physical therapy because it improves both gait and balance. Most classes don't require any experience with dance or practice between sessions. Most importantly, many community centers and retirement homes offer free or inexpensive dance classes for senior citizens. Enrolling in one of these age-specific programs ensures the moves will be more appropriate for individual strength levels. Additionally, they provide great opportunities for socialization with other seniors.
